John R. Kompa Sr. 75, of Norwalk, Ohio died on March 26, 2021 at MetroHealth Hospital, Cleveland after a year-long brave fight with pancreatic cancer. He was born on October 3, 1945 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to the now deceased Chester and Helen (Jansto) Kompa. John graduated from Beaver Falls High School and Henderson County Junior College before receiving a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Waynesburg University and a master’s degree in Education from Bowling Green State University.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, John was also an educator and coach, teaching at Norwalk High School for 40 years, coaching basketball at the high school junior varsity basketball level for many years. He also worked at the Ohio Turnpike Commission for 42 ½ years. He enjoyed sports and traveling and he and his loving wife, Barb (Inman) Kompa enjoyed cruises and were 4-Star Mariner Club members of the Holland America cruise line. John was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Norwalk.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 53 years, Barb (Inman) Kompa; sons, John R. (Natalie) Kompa Jr. and Brian M. Kompa all of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Ben, Olivia, Paige, Brock, and Brook Kompa; siblings, Susan (Richard) Dillon of Clermont, Florida, Richard (Betty) Kompa of Douglas, Massachusetts, Thomas (Michele) Kompa of Orefield, Pennsylvania, Marianne Kompa of Cary, North Carolina and sister in-law, Elaine Kompa of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ed, and Bill Kompa.
Friends and family may visit on Friday, April 9, 2021 at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk from 4 until 6 p.m. A funeral mass will be held the following day, Saturday, April 10, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, Norwalk. Those who will be visiting at the funeral home and the church are reminded to bring and wear a mask and practice all social distancing and mass gathering guidelines.
