George Mitro Obituary

George Mitro, 89, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2020 in his home. He was born to the late Paul and Mary Mitro on April 24, 1931, in Linden, New Jersey. George graduated from Linden High School, and Newark College of Engineering.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War where he earned a purple heart. Following his service, he was a member of the Honor Guard, and walked in President Eisenhauer’s inauguration parade.  He worked for Chemical Plastics in New Jersey, and in 1982, moved his family to the Norwalk area for a job as a plant manager with PMS Consolidated until his retirement.  After retiring, he joined his wife and daughter in running Handicraft Headquarters in Norwalk, until 2016.  George was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), V.F.W. Post 2743, Norwalk, Ohio, and he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, also in Norwalk.

George is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret A. “Marge” Mitro of Norwalk, Ohio, by his children, Ruthanne Phillips of Acton, California, George E. Mitro of Fort Worth, Texas, Donna M. Mitro of Norwalk, Ohio and Mary C. (Brian) Leuschel of Berea, Ohio.  He is also survived by four grandchildren, George, Jessica, Megan and Marissa, by one great-grandson, Michael, by his sister, Mary Kosko of New Jersey, and by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Paul and Ann.

A drive through visitation to show support for the family will be held at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors should enter using the funeral home’s east entrance, remain in their vehicles, briefly greet the family, and exit using the west exit. Visitors are also encouraged to wear a mask and practice all social distancing and mass gathering guidelines.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, followed by interment at St Paul’s Cemetery. Msgr. Ken Morman will officiate.
