Frederick Gott Obituary

Frederick Wallace Gott, 76, of Brighton Twp., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Monday, October 4, 2021 at Cleveland Fairhill Specialty Hospital. He was born on October 26, 1944 in Oberlin and was the son of the late Nellie May (nee Strine) and George Gott. Fred was a 1962 Wellington High School graduate and attended the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio where he became a meat cutter by trade. Upon graduation, he worked for Medina Packing before opening his own store, Northern Foods, in 1967 and then The Butcher Shoppe in 1969, both in Mansfield, Ohio. The Butcher Shoppe has been a successful neighborhood store for over 50 years due to the loyal staff and faithful customers.

He was a member of Wellington FFA and Wellington FFA Alumni.  Fred was proud of the fact that his daughter Coleen and his son Jeff were both President of their Wellington FFA Chapter, as he had been. He received an Honorary State Degree through the Wellington Chapter. He enjoyed agriculture and farming. He began farming in 1965 and later partnered with long-time friend John Dowdell to operate Gott - Dowdell Farms.

Since 1965, Fred was an active member of Brighton Congregational Church and served as Deacon and Trustee throughout the years. His church family was very dear to him. He felt blessed to have been surrounded by their love, support and prayers. He was a life-long avid bow hunter, a passion he shared with close friends, Robert Stanfield and Kenneth Arnett.  He also loved to travel and collect Farmall antique tractors, which he enjoyed showing off with his family in the Rochester Fourth of July parade. Fred was a proud Papa. He spent hours on the farm helping his grandchildren raise their 4-H hog projects. He also enjoyed attending their many plays and sporting events.

Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Donna (nee Day) Gott; children Coleen Wright of Wellington and Jeff (Barbara) Gott of Brighton; grandchildren Joshua, Victoria, Jamie, Wyatt and Alison; sisters Bonnie Anderson of Columbus and Betty (Ron) Hershey of Mansfield; nephews Mike (Leslie) Anderson, Darrell (Sarah) Hershey, Jason Hershey and many great nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Gary Anderson and niece Lynette (Dave) Prater.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 4-8pm at Brighton Congregational Church, 22086 State Route 511, Wellington, OH 44090, where services will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 11am with Pastor John Burgess officiating. Burial will take place at Brighton Township Cemetery.
