Donald P. "Short" Long

Donald P. “Short” Long, 66, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away on May 15, 2022, at University Hospital in Cleveland.  He was born on May 16, 1955, in Norwalk, Ohio to the late Maralyn (Mettert) and Paul W. Long Sr.  Don was a 1973 Monroeville High School graduate. 

Among his many hobbies and interests, Don enjoyed camping, kayaking, pickleball, Dartball (he played for 48 years), softball (playing until he was 62), card games, Dominoes, Sudoku, Caribbean cruises, Florida beaches, shark tooth hunting, he was an avid Cleveland sports fan, gatherings with family and friends, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. 

Don was a member of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Church in Norwalk.  He had worked for 42 years for Norfolk Southern as a conductor before his retirement in 2015.  He also was a roofer for Didion Builders and served 10 years on the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 44 years, Sharon (Zureich) Long; children, Bradley (Kristen) Long of Norwalk and Erin Long of Sandusky; grandchildren, Madelyn, Camden, Ireland and Emerson; siblings, Doug (Sue) Long of Monroeville, Greg (Diana) Long of Norton, Ohio, Ted (Tracy) Long of Monroeville and Elaine (Dustin) Shaver of Monroeville; and brother in-law, Steve (Kathy) Zureich of Columbus. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul W. Long Jr. and infant brother, Allen Long.

A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, Ohio 44857, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.  A Funeral Mass will be held the following day, Friday, May 20, 2022, at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Church, 38 W.
