Viona Carey Obituary

Viona Leonaus Carey, 84, a longtime resident of Collins, died Friday, September 6, 2019 at Fisher-Titus Medical Center.  She was born on July 19, 1935 in Townsend to the late Warren and Marjorie (nee Bailey) Ward.

Viona, aka Vi, was a 1953 Norwalk High School graduate.  She loved the Lord, her family, and her church.  Vi also loved the Cleveland Indians and had at one time enjoyed playing women’s softball and was a longtime scorekeeper for the Norwalk Park and Rec. Dept.  She was a 4-H Leader and supporter, Grange member, and head band booster at Western Reserve at one time as well. 

Viona was a US Postal Carrier for many years before answering the call to missions work with her late husband Frank.  Vi and Frank dedicated their time to the Crosslands Missions Team and the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico and then on to Missionary Flights International in West Palm Beach, Florida before later managing Lopez RV Park together in Oak Hills, Florida. 

Survivors include, her children, Kenneth W. (Stephanie) Carey of Amherst, Cheryl E. Saxton of Columbia, SC, Letitia J. (Christopher) Scheck of West Jefferson, OH and Richard J. (Sandy) Carey of Norwalk; sisters Hazel Ward and Cornelia Giesecke of Collins; brother, Warren Ward of Salem, AL; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband Frank Carey in 2003. 

Visitation will be on Monday, September 9, 2019, from 5 pm – 8 pm at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk.  Friends may also visit on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 from noon until the time of the 1 pm service at Calvary Baptist Church, 250 Benedict Ave., Norwalk.  Burial will follow in Collins Cemetery after the service.  Memorial gifts in Viona’s honor may be directed to Missionary Flights International, 3170 Airmans Drive, Fort Pierce, FL, 34946.  Expressions of sympathy may be directed online at www.walkereastmanheydingerfh.com.
